THE CONCEPT
Chrono Rift began as an experiment in deterministic state rollback systems. The core idea was to allow players to separate their character from the flow of time affecting the environment. This required building a custom physics engine layer on top of Unity's PhysX to handle delta-time manipulation on a per-object basis.
The aesthetic was driven by the technical constraint of "glitching" reality. We used custom shaders to create chromatic aberration and vertex displacement effects that react to the player's time-manipulation abilities.
